Sanders Announces Funding in Place to Complete New Central Library Construction
Mayor Jerry Sanders revealed that funding is in place to complete construction of the New Central Library. The Library Foundation announces a new phase of fundraising to build a stronger Library system.
In his State of the City address, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders announced that funding is in place to complete construction of the New Central Library.
In July 2010, the City Council authorized Library construction in two phases. The Library Foundation raised $32.4 million in private funds to ensure completion of phase one of construction—the basic building structure—which will be complete this summer.
With the additional $32.5 million secured by the Library Foundation since groundbreaking, phase two of construction will be completed. “This is truly a public/private partnership and 38.5 percent of the project’s total funding comes from generous San Diegans,” noted Katz.
While funds for completion of construction are secure, Katz said the Library Foundation will continue fundraising—building an endowment, special programming and enhancing the library’s collection. The Foundation also will continue to attract capital contributions. Katz said a number of visible naming opportunities are still available in the New Central Library, including the panoramic three-story Reading Room.
