In a column on San Diego News Network, Former City Council President Scott Peters urged San Diego to move forward with plans for a new Central Library. He noted that the proposal for a new Library has been discussed for decades, but that the time is right for this project to move forward.
"Public libraries are especially important here in San Diego, where our future depends on education and competing in the idea economy," Mr. Peters said. "A modern library is an information center, from books to the internet, available to everyone, regardless of socio-economic status. Fundamentally, we know that education is the quickest and maybe the only path to a better economy and a vibrant and safer city."
In closing his column, Mr. Peters says, "It’s not easy, and Mayor Sanders, the city council, the school board, and countless patrons, donors and volunteers deserve our thanks for working hard and creatively so that we can see this happen. Here’s hoping we finish the job. We will be better for it."
