In town recently to promote his book on California history, former California State Librarian Kevin Starr noted the need for San Diego to move forward with efforts to build a new Central Library. VISIT HERE for the San Diego Union-Tribune article on Mr. Starr's comments.
As State Librarian from 1994 to 2004, Mr. Starr helped approve $20 million in Proposition 14 state grant money for the proposed new Central Library in San Diego. He continues to support the project.
Answering critics who say libraries are obsolete, Mr. Starr said, "We're publishing 134,000 titles a year,” he said. “A library is a total cultural community center. We're going to put in books, computers, digital information, archives.”
