UT: Council and School District must approve school

April 19

In an editorial published this morning, the San Diego Union-Tribune encouraged the San Diego City Council and the San Diego Unified School District to approve plans to locate a charter high school at the new Central Library.

The Council will vote today at its 2 p.m. meeting (202 C Street, 12th floor) to approve a lease negotiated with the San Diego Unified School District to use the top two floors of the proposed new downtown central library for a high school. The School Board will vote on the proposal at its April 27 meeting at 5 p.m. (Brucker Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal Street).

The school district would use $20 million in bond funds already approved by voters to prepay 40 yers of rent for the school space and those funds would be used to help fund construction of the library.

"This lease should be a slam dunk for approval," noted the Union Tribune. The paper encouraged the City to move forward. "The City Council, and the school board next week, cannot let this unique opportunity pass."
