New Central Library to “Turn a Page”

July 25, 2010

A recent San Diego Union-Tribune article explored the community benefits of the New Central Library, comparing the project to other successful Central Libraries constructed around the country, including in Seattle and Salt Lake City.

“Judging by six other large cities that built main libraries in the past 15 years, the transformation of San Diego’s downtown will be both subtle and significant,” said the article. “San Diego’s estimated $185 million library will draw crowds and critics, architectural buffs and street people, caffeinated students and culture seekers.”

The article also quoted Shannon Mattern, of The New School in New York City, who noted that Library use is at an all time high throughout the country. Expanded Library space will better meet this growing need, including providing job searching resources, free cultural programming and research.

The groundbreaking for the New Central Library will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at 10 a.m. at 11th and K Street in downtown San Diego.  The ceremony will be a community celebration of a new day for San Diego’s Public Library system. For more information, visit here.
