Media outlets nationwide are noting an upturn in library activity during the economic downturn.
A recent LA Times article noted that more people than ever are using free library resources, including DVDs, CDs and internet access in an effort to save money.
The American Library Association (ALA) said there was a 10 percent increase nationwide in library visits and items circulated in 2008 versus the previous year. The San Diego Public Library has seen similar trends with circulation up eight percent in the last quarter.
The ALA also noted that job hunters are turning to their local library for assistance. ALA President-elect Camila Alire noted that only 44 of the top 100 U.S. retailers accepts paper job applications meaning more people use the library's free internet access to file applications online.
Other stories on the increased need for libraries appeared on CBS News, NBC Nightly News and National Public Radio.
