In recent editorials, the San Diego Union-Tribune called for City leaders to move forward with efforts to break ground on a new Central Library. Proposals to locate a new City high school at the new Central site were lauded as an "inspired venture."
On January 1, a Union-Tribune editorial noted that the new Central project is an amazing opportunity that should be pursued. "Overarching budget challenges should not obscure the opportunities that 2009 will bring," noted the editorial. "For instance, the long-deferred vision of a new central library in the East Village can be achieved through a promising collaborative effort by the city and the San Diego Unified School District. Mayor Jerry Sanders and school Superintendent Terry Grier must make it happen early in 2009." For the complete editorial, visit here.
In a December 19 editorial, the Union-Tribune said the proposal to locate a high school at the library site was an "inspired venture." The proposal helps close the project's funding gap and provides a high school that can capitalize on the amazing resources the library would provide.
"The simple truth is that San Diego can realize the dream of a new library – and an impressive new high school – without undermining its general fund and in spite of its fiscal challenges...San Diego deserves a new central library. A viable funding plan is in hand at last. With continued strong leadership from Mayor Sanders and Superintendent Grier, it is time for the school board and the City Council to make it happen."
