Most Pressing Needs
The Central Library is the heart and nerve center of the library system. Program development, literary collections, reference materials and technical resources originate at the Central Library, as does all disabled access, technology and web-based services and telephone reference questions.
San Diego needs a new Central Library. The current building is past its capacity and strains to fullfil its role as the headquarters for the 35 branch library system. Support is needed to move forward with plans for a first-class, adaptable center for literacy and reading worthy of America's Finest City.
Funding for books and materials are always a pressing need. As city budgets tighten, the Library is hard-pressed to grow the collections.
Your gift today to support books and collections will be matched dollar-for-dollar with a special City matching fund.
San Diego has made great progress in improving outdated branch libraries with seven new or expanded branches completed since 2002. Additionally, plans are in place to renovate and improve 15 additional branch libraries through out the city. For example, the Logan Heights Branch Library opened in late 2009. Mission Hills, San Carlos, and Skyline Hills are ongoing projects that need additional support.
