The Library Foundation is looking for its next CEO

San Diego Public Library Foundation Chief Executive Officer

The San Diego Public Library Foundation (SDPLF) is seeking an experienced nonprofit executive to lead the organization. SDPLF is the major source of private funding for the San Diego Public Library System and its programs. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. SDPLF employs 10 – 12 people with an operating budget that ranges from $3.5 million – $5 million annually.

The CEO serves as the public face of SDPLF and is ultimately responsible for fund development, public relations and marketing, sound financial management, and supervision of staff and business operations in accordance with standard business practices in the nonprofit sector. The CEO reports to the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

The CEO works with the Board of Trustees to define priorities and oversee the implementation of the strategic plan. She or he fosters and develops teamwork among staff and Board members, and ensures program and fiscal accountability.

She or he works collaboratively with the Director of the San Diego Public Library System and maintains good relations with Library stakeholders, including the Library Commission, City of San Diego elected officials, and the Friends of the Library. The CEO monitors the City Budget and budgeting process to develop and sustain public-private cooperation and partnership on Library programs, buildings and infrastructure.

The successful candidate will be an effective leader with proven skills in: strategic thinking; innovative fundraising, with the ability to diversify revenue streams; forging strong community connections; and building successful collaborations.

Candidate must demonstrate exceptional written and oral communication skills, strong financial management and budgeting experience, and be familiar enough with fundraising software and database management to oversee such activities. She or he must have proven experience in coaching, counseling, and motivating a staff.

Bachelor’s degree required; relevant Master’s degree preferred. Minimum of six years nonprofit management experience; direct experience with public/private partnerships highly preferred.
